3.1 Publishing management

Pressed for time? Need an extra hand? Or perhaps not sure how to handle your publication? Using experienced publishing professionals, Red Lettuce Communications can manage the publication of your document. We can step in at any stage of the publishing process (Figure 3.1), or coordinate everything from start to finish—all with a fast turnaround.

We can particularly save you time by liaising with project staff and authors to collate material. If you need to reproduce figures, then you will benefit from our in-house graphics editing service. And if you need to obtain copyright permissions, we will also liaise on your behalf with copyright holders.

With access to specialist publishing services, we can complete your publication with graphic design and desktop publishing, indexing, press-quality document formatting, and printing quotations for short-run digital or long-run offset printing. Administration can also include publishing legals such as obtaining ISBN and Cataloguing-in-Publication details, and legal deposit.

3.2 Writing and rewriting

Too busy to start writing? With expertise in technical and scientific research and writing, we act as ghost writers and start you off by compiling and synthesising information, and preparing a first draft—from planning a structure for your document, to sourcing and integrating text, graphics and statistical data. You get a draft that you can further refine to your own style.

Perhaps you need a technical document rewritten or summarised in plain English for non-technical readers. We will eliminate jargon and provide more explanatory information to simplify complex topics so your publication will reach a wider audience.

3.3 Editingservices are

Complete editing available—substantive editing, copy editing and proofreading—for word processing packages and hardcopy mark-up. We now also support graphics editing to reproduce figures to press quality.

3.4 Desktop publishing

Through specialist service providers, we can assist with graphic design of publications for inside pages and the cover—this includes stock photo research. Your document can also be typeset with professional desktop publishing services, and output as a draft PDF for previewing or as a final for press.

3.5 Indexing

Professional back-of-book indexing is available, and is undertaken in accordance with Australian conventions as per the Style manual and Australian standard AS/NZS 999:1999. Our indexer is experienced in Australian Government publications and a wide range of subject areas. Indexing covers hierarchical entries and locators, concepts in the text, proper names, scientific nomenclature, double entries, illustrations and cross-references to related terms.

3.6 Document preparation

Once your publication has been edited, designed and typeset—or even if you are preparing the final straight from a word processing document—we can produce a print-ready, colour-separated, accessible PDF with bookmarks and navigation, and edit PDF text to correct finer details. Or we can produce and 'preflight' InDesign files for publishers. Or even edit web pages as XHTML with CSS—whatever formats you need.
