Editing services

Whether you need to finalise government or corporate reports for publishing, or need proofreading of books or academic theses, you will benefit from our full range of editing services. We edit to Australian Government publishing standards and adhere to the Australian standards for editing practice.

Clients can also take advantage of our expertise in high-level publishing management services—from research, writing and editing right through to author liaison, design and document formatting. We are well resourced to handle large and complex documents, and collaborative authoring.

Throughout the editing process, we attend briefing sessions and regularly liaise with authors, managers and relevant staff to ensure that we apply appropriate style and that documents are complete—such as checking for missing material and clarifying information. For complex documents, we would progress through several drafts from substantive editing and copy editing to proofreading.

Substantive editing is a complete assessment of document structure, logical paragraph and sentence structure, language style, spelling, grammar, fact-checking, accuracy of citations and references, ensuring figures and tables are referenced in the text, presenting statistical and tabular data, and even graphics editing. The service also covers compilation of preliminary matter and end matter—the executive summary, contents, lists of figures and tables, acronyms, glossary, references and appendices.

Copy editing is the next stage, where we recheck the whole document is complete, preliminary matter and end matter are finalised, text and graphics match up and are formatted correctly, and statistical data are represented appropriately. We follow up with authors if any new material needs to be incorporated.

Proofreading typically involves checking spelling and grammar—a 'last look' before an index is prepared and the document goes to press.

Academic editing

With experience in scientific writing, and publishing conference and journal papers, we can assist with editing your academic thesis or paper. Editing covers the citation styles of the Australian Government Publishing Service (AGPS) Style manual, Australian Guide to Legal Citation, American Psychological Association (APA) Publication manual, Modern Language Association of America (MLA), Harvard, Vancouver and Chicago. Academic theses are copy edited in accordance with the Guidelines for Editing Research Theses.

Formats

We handle documents in Microsoft Word ('track changes'), RTF, Adobe InDesign, PDF ('sticky notes' or text touchup) or XHTML – and at any stage of the publishing process, for print or web. Documents can also be edited as hardcopy with proofreading mark-up, which is suitable for theses.
